The student president of an Oxford University college has been found dead in his room.

Andrew Mason, 20, the president of Balliol College's Junior Common Room, was found on Monday.

Thames Valley Police said no-one was being sought in connection with the death, which was being treated as "unexplained but not suspicious".

An inquest is expected to be held at a later date.

Mr Mason, who was in the third year of a four-year degree in physics and philosophy, had no record of being depressed, according to a spokesman for the college, who described him as an "outgoing student" and an "extremely popular and effective President of the JCR".

The spokesman added that Mr Mason, from Nottingham, was managing to combine the heavy demands of bring JCR President with exceptionally good academic work.

Andrew Graham, the Master of Balliol College, added: "I met him regularly. He had a very positive attitude to Balliol and to life more generally.

"He was thoughtful, energetic, and down to earth to an unusual degree. I enjoyed working with him. I am as stunned as everyone else by this awful and inexplicable news."

It is understood that Mr Mason had a girlfriend, sang in the college choir, and was a rower. He intended to work for the World Bank or the Civil Service.
