The county is expected to be at the centre of a snow storm tomorrow, with up to six inches of snow predicted to fall.

Motorists have been warned to take care ahead of the anticipated bad weather and make sure they are properly prepared.

The Met Office says there is a 70 per cent chance of snow settling after it begins to fall at about 3am - and it is expected to continue falling until 9am.

It says at least two inches of snow will fall across southern England, but said there was a "reasonable" chance the depth could reach six inches.

Met Office forecaster Wayne Elliot said: "Oxfordshire is pretty much in the centre of the area where the snow will hit worst. It's notoriously difficult to forecast snow, but we're fairly confident that there will be a significant snowfall across the south.

"We expect Oxfordshire to see two to five centimetres, but it's not out of the question that it could see 10-15cm."

The snow is expected to disrupt morning rush-hour traffic. Schools could also be affected.

Temperatures are expected to drop to -2C tonight.

Oxfordshire County Council gritters were out treating major roads across the county from 7pm last night.

The vehicles they were due to head out again tonight to cope with the snowfall.

Mr Elliot added: "The period of snow could cause disruption to travel networks, especially across high level routes and the fact that the timing will coincide with the morning rush-hour."

Members of the public are being advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and weather warnings on the Met Office's website at www.metoffice.gov.uk

Temperatures are expected to rise again after the weekend.

Snow last fell in Oxfordshire two weeks ago, but melted within hours - although at least three pedestrians were taken to hospital after they were involved in collisions with cars as snow.
