Police have arrested 48 people in the first eight days of Operation Backlash - a drive to catch Oxford's most prolific criminals.

Police today announced they had arrested the 48 on suspicion of crimes including burglary, robbery, driving offences and failing to appear at court. Eight were charged.

Acting Det Insp Kev Elkins, who heads Oxford's priority crime teams, which include car crime, burglary and robbery, said: "We're extremely pleased with the positive results from the operation so far.

"Operation Backlash is getting officers out there and after known criminals and arrests are being made.

"We want to reassure residents of Oxford that we will relentlessly pursue these prolific offenders until they are bought to justice."
