One highlight of the year for members of Barton Boys' Club in Oxford was a day trip to the seaside.

They were organised by Plum' Brown who, as we recalled last week, set up the club.

Former member Chris Hall writes: "We had once-a-year coach trips to seaside places like Brighton and Lee-on-Solent and, in later years, enjoyed boat trips to Abingdon.

"For us - parents and children of Barton and particularly Barton Village - these trips were our annual and, for most, our only experience of a holiday.

"We eagerly awaited the coach departing from the Princes Castle.

"Nobby Clark, a pigeon fancier, would bring a basket of pigeons along on the trips to the seaside, then at some point let them go to see if they made it back to his aviary at 19 Barton Village Road. They always did. On these holiday trips, my chums and I enjoyed the penny arcades which, no doubt, are long gone.

"Thank you Plum' Brown. Your friends, neighbours, parents and children thank you for making our lives less dull. You were a gentleman and are greatly remembered."

Mr Hall hopes that other former members will send in their memories and pictures of the club.

He tells me: "They were happy days in the 1950s and 1960s when we lived in a more respectful and innocent time and our pleasures were simple. We played street games like Nick-Nock-Nanny with a tin can on a lamp-post, played British Bulldog on the Bonny Banks, or tried to cross from one side of the road to the other.

"One person called out a colour and if your clothes were that colour, you could step forward one pace until the first one reached the opposite side.

"Oh happy days - and we caused no harm to man or beast. Our parents knew we were safe in 'Plum' Brown's charge.

"I, for one, was sad to see the club come to an end when he retired, I think due to ill health."

Mr Hall, of Brome Place, Barton, remembers that 'Plum' lived with his family in Bernwood Road, Barton, and that his garden had a hollybush near the front gate.

Thanks to readers who have written in since the first article appeared last week. Look out for more memories and tributes to 'Plum' Brown soon.
