The mystery football match at the White House ground in Oxford wasn't a mystery for long (Memory Lane, January 15).

Reader Neil Harris quickly identified it as a game between an Oxford City Junior League Representative XI and an Oxford City XI.

The game took place on August 27, 1958, and the City Junior League team won 2-1.

Mr Harris, of Westlands Avenue, Weston-on-the-Green, should know - he played in the match.

The original picture sent in by David Hussey, of The Green, Horspath, was found on top of a boiler at his old house in the village.

He couldn't remember playing in the match and thought he was the player on the right, in the hooped shirt.

In fact, Mr Harris tells me, Mr Hussey is the player on the left in the white shirt. He writes: "David and I both played for St Clement's Borough FC, a club in the City Junior League.

"In 1958, David lived in St Clement's and I lived in New Marston.

"St Clement's FC folded two years later, with David going to play for Oxford YMCA, while I then played for several seasons for Keystones FC (Oxford & Worcester Boys Club Old Boys) in the Oxfordshire Senior League.

"I recognised David immediately in the picture and have spoken to him on the phone.

"It was great to speak to him, 49 years on from this match, and we have arranged to meet shortly to further reminisce over a pint (or three)."
