A RADIO show poll on whether two turkeys should be ‘kept’ or ‘cooked’ has been condemned by the RSPCA.

JACK FM is running an online poll to decide the fate of two turkeys from an Oxfordshire farm.

The turkeys, named Sage and Onion, are the only two of the 300-strong gang yet to be killed from Callow Farm in North Oxfordshire.

Last night around two-thirds had voted in favour of saving the turkeys.

Harriet Cawley, a spokeswoman for the RSPCA said: “We do not see the entertainment value in killing an animal for this purpose.

“We would strongly urge the radio production team to rethink this stunt.”

She added: “While we appreciate this is intended as a light-hearted festive feature the RSPCA opposes practices that have the potential to cause animals pain, suffering or death in the name of entertainment.”

Brian May has criticised Jack FM's poll

Queen guitarist and RSPCA vice-president Brian May tweeted he was “disgusted” by the stunt.

If the poultry survive the vote they will move into an animal sanctuary. If they don’t they will be slaughtered live on air and eaten by listeners next week.

Presenter Caroline Verdon said: “We want people to have an open debate about food provenance. I know a lot of people who eat meat and can’t bear thinking about a pig rolling around in the mud or cow grazing in a field. To be forced to confront it I don’t think is a bad thing.”
