Sir – I would like to thank your many readers who have written to me about cycling improvements in Oxford, following your story in July.

In fact most of most of the city council cash available is already committed to various projects.

The city will improve the canal towpath near Aristotle Lane, resurface Willow Walk in West Oxford, and contribute to the county scheme to make cycling safer at The Plain.

The city will put additional money into a revamped Frideswide Square with significant improvements for cyclists. The truth is we could spend any allocation for cycling in Oxford ten times over.

We are already taking down unnecessary barriers on off-road bike routes and will resurface cycle paths through Hinksey Park and along Meadow Lane.

But I’m very grateful for the many good ideas I have received.

We will either add them to the list of things the city council might do, pass them to the county council which is the highway authority, or feed them into the county’s forthcoming plan for transport in Oxford.

Continuing cycle lanes at junctions, better signing and filling in potholes, as well as more lanes for bikes, are among the top ten ideas. Then people want to ban parked cars from cycle lanes, more cycle parking (especially in the city centre) and joined-up pedalling routes across Oxford. Finally readers want new cycle-ways (such as from Eynsham to Oxford), two-way cycling down some one-way streets and more vehicles keeping to 20mph.

Oxford has to significantly improve its game if we are to get more us out of our cars and on to two wheels.
