Sir — Having attended the family day at St Gregory’s School to raise money for the Gaza crisis, I was heartened to see the extent of support for the people devastated in that area.

Although public opinion may now be more sympathetic to the plight of those in Gaza caught up in the war, I am surprised by the tone of recent reporting.

Most of those reporting on the situation seem to start from the view that Israel has every right to defend its borders without ever mentioning that Palestine also has every right to defend itself.

There is little mention of the background to the ongoing situation in which Israel illegitimately seized land in the Six Day War in 1967 and has constantly refused to return it and continues to aggressively expand its settlements.

The war may have been triggered by the death of three Israeli teenagers, but little mention is made of the routine harassment and detention of hundreds of Palestinians youths.

We are prepared to impose sanctions against Russia for its part in supporting the Ukrainian separtists, but there is little public call for sanctions against Israel. Vested interests rather than morality seem to be informing our foreign policy.
