Sir – This week President Evo Morales took a brave step (which other world leaders have shied away from) and openly criticised the state of Israel for its recent actions in Gaza.

Operation Protective edge, he said, showed that “Israel is not a guarantor of the principles of respect for life and the elementary precepts of rights that govern the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of our international community”.

We sit in front of our TV screens each night sadly shaking our heads at the unfolding tragedy, but Morales is right. It is time to speak out. It is time to act — to boycott Israeli goods and the companies who support theiir military, and to tell our political leaders that we condemn what is happening in Gaza.

Perhaps our own Oxford City Council, could begin with a similar declaration of condemnation.
