Sir – I was sorry that the only aspect of the National Front march and the anti-fascist protest last Saturday which you reported last week was the arrests.

The protest was a demonstration by more than 100 people, including ministers from a number of the religions represented in Oxford, against a march by a small group of National Front members and supporters, who came from outside Oxfordshire.

The intention of the protest was to make clear to the many tourists and visitors that this group did not represent Oxford, nor was their racist agenda supported by the people of Oxford.

Regrettably, the police allowed the National Front group to march up George Street while corralling the protesters in New Inn Hall Street, thereby giving some protesters the most unfortunate, if entirely mistaken, impression that the police were supporting the National Front.

I very much hope that this misapprehension was not shared by the overseas visitors and others in Oxford that day.
