I never thought that the First World War would become so personal. My husband Daniel from Abingdon – now of New York – lost his uncle Daniel Goddard, age 19, in the battle of the Somme in July 1916.
He was the son of Chief Constable Daniel Goddard of Abingdon. When we visit England we make sure that our grandchildren visit the war memorial to see his name listed on the cenotaph.
The reading of all 1,300 names in Abingdon recently must have been very moving. We were there with you in spirit.
