DURING the Second World War, most cities and towns ‘adopted’ a ship of the Royal Navy. The city of Oxford adopted the cruiser HMS Enterprise, and our citizens became proud of her distinguished service.
This included a significant naval victory when she overcame a superior force of German warships in the Bay of Biscay which became known as The Battle of the Bay.
Of more recent interest, HMS Enterprise played a substantial part in Operation Overlord in D-Day.
It can be imagined, therefore, the astonishment when there was not one word about Oxford’s adopted warship in your D-Day Supplement and the utter disappointment for those of us Royal Navy war veterans who still remain.
