I am writing concerning the HS2 and Chilterns story (‘Standing in the way of our natural beauty’, May 30). I think that the HS2 Rail Link should be cancelled immediately as those whom we least trust, politicians, are in favour of it.

If those in favour want to arrive earlier then they should set out earlier – job done.

HS2 will end up like the M6 toll motorway around Birmingham and the Concorde airliner and be underused due to cost with the public preferring cheaper options – another reason not to spend the publics taxes on it. The HS1 through the Channel Tunnel is 20 per cent more expensive per passenger mile than ‘other’ rail journeys, and we all know how expensive ‘other’ rail journeys are, don’t we ?

If HS2 is built, most passengers will choose cheaper non-HS2 trains, making HS2 a massive loss-maker to the public but making millions for bankers.

If it is such a good idea, why should the taxpayer pay?

Just like the banks, if it goes ‘right’ we pay, and if it goes ‘wrong’ we pay.

Those in favour of HS2 are just bankers who like to play with trains. When they say ‘we’re all in it together’ they mean we all pay for it, even if we can’t afford to use it.
