I SEE Heathrow airport is proposing to follow London’s and Singapore’s example of implementing a congestion charge.
Oxford’s roads suffer from a lot of traffic destined for the city centre, its hospitals, universities and shops.
As a result the road network suffers from damage to our roads and the city’s residents experience noise, congestion and pollution, including smog at times caused by commuters, which is not good for the people living in the area. It is time commuters paid the full cost of damage to Oxford’s environment.
This situation is likely to worsen with the redevelopment of Westgate shopping centre and further expansion of the universities.
It is time something was done to tackle the traffic problems the area faces.
One solution would be to follow London’s lead and introduce a congestion charge.
This could help reduce the traffic generated by Oxford Brookes University, Oxford hospitals and other major employers.
The money generated could be used to repair and improve our roads, also improve public transport services such as the proposed tram network for Oxford.
