Sir – ‘Once in a hundred years’, they said of the 2007 floods. But only seven years later Oxfordshire (and much of southern England) is again under water.

And it’s a safe bet it’ll soon happen again, only worse. If all this flooding misery is what we get with (so far) less than one degree of global warming, what’s it going to be like when the planet has heated up four degrees or more?

And have no doubt that’s what we’re all heading for, unless we stop burning fossil fuels — coal, oil and gas — altogether. And soon.
This was the subject of an urgent meeting in Oxford Town Hall last week. People came together to form a new Oxfordshire Climate and Flooding Alliance, to call for practical action, locally and nationally.
l We need major changes in water management, right across the River Thames catchment area, to limit the extent and impact of flooding.
l And we need a rapid shift away from fossil fuels in our energy supply, as their use is the main cause of increasing global temperatures.
The Oxfordshire Climate and Flooding Alliance intends to lobby David Cameron to implement these demands. But we need your support. This letter is an open invitation for concerned individuals and groups all over Oxfordshire to join us. If you share our concerns, please contact Daniel Scharf at: pause.forthought@gmail.com
Our next meeting is March 25, 7pm, at Oxford Town Hall. Everyone welcome. Please tell all your friends. See also: https://www.facebook.com/OxfordshireClimateFloodingAlliance.
