IS it a comedy or a tragedy that the residents of Botley are all ‘swotting up on the material considerations of planning applications for their Doric objection letters’ as John Marriott so rightly says they are (March 11).

The picture has its nicely comical side but the tragedy is that local residents should have to do this. The proposed development is massively oversized for its site and surroundings. That is unarguable. It goes way beyond the scheme on which the Vale council consulted three years ago.

Oxford Mail: West Way Community Concern co-chairman Chris Church

West Way Community Concern co-chairman Chris Church and residents protest Doric's proposals

Its main components (huge superstore, six-screen cinema, 525 student rooms) are not needed or wanted and to accommodate them, the developers propose the unnecessary and unwished-for demolition of the Elms Parade shops, the vicarage and Field House.

The whole thing is ludicrous. And the residents of Botley will carry on saying so for as long as it takes.
