Sir – Referring to your article on Cheney School and the introduction of Latin at A-level: I am delighted to see the introduction of Latin at my old school.
However, I was rather surprised to read that Latin at A-level is available for the “first time” in a state school in Oxford. I did Latin A-level at Cheney, in 1987, with the amazing support of Miss Smith, the Latin teacher at the time. One boy from Oxford Boys and one girl from Milham Ford were also in the class. So we were three state school pupils. Now, almost 30 years later, my daughter has also just taken up Latin (here in Germany) and I am very happy to support her in this. I wish all the sixth-form students all the best for their studies in this great subject.
