Sir – We as a nation need to treat the elderly with greater understanding. With this in mind the Dignity Code was launched in the House of Commons last year.
The purpose of the Dignity Code is to uphold the rights and maintain the personal dignity of older people, particularly with regard to hospital and care provision. With this in mind, Saturday, February 1 has been designated Dignity Day with events taking place across the country to highlight the issue and draw attention to the Dignity Code.
In Oxford, there will be a publicity stall in Cornmarket between 11am and 2pm, together with street theatre and an opportunity to sign the NPC Dignity in Care petition. In the afternoon, between 2-4pm, there will be an event within the council chamber of the Town Hall where there will be contributions from individuals and organisations representing the needs of the elderly, including Rodney Bickerstaffe. There will be information stalls in the St Aldate’s room. As February 1 is a Saturday, this is a rare opportunity for the public to see the council chamber and have a relaxing afternoon. Long term, it is hoped Dignity Day will become a permanent date in the calendar, along with Mother’s and Valentine’s Day.
