Sir – Anyone who has been following the scandal of the Castle Mill flats next to Port Meadow will have noticed by now that what the city council says is not always confirmed by the facts.

One need look no further than the council’s own review into what happened. The council rushed to claim that this review had ‘cleared’ it, when, in fact, it had agreed with protesters that there had been serious failings by both the council and Oxford University.

So, perhaps, no one should be surprised when council leader, Bob Price, responding to severe criticism about the flats fiasco from the Government’s Planning Minister, asserts (presumably by way of justification) that English Heritage had not objected to the plans. There is a simple explanation for this: English Heritage did not object to the plans because it was not told about them.

It is high time that city councillors and officers upped their game and showed the people of Oxford some respect.
