THERE may be many views about whether HS2 is both necessary and worth the cost, but Adrian Taylor’s view (January 14) that it is being built for Mr David Cameron’s supposed wealthy supporters is frankly ridiculous.
Much of the route is through what is naturally Conservative countryside, hardly endearing himself to his natural supporters, and I wonder who were the wealthy that the Labour party were sucking up to as it was the last Labour Government that instigated the whole enterprise.
We all need to be thankful that Brunel and his fellow Victorians were resourceful, industrious and had the political will power to build the rail network, most of which we are still using, which is now in need of modernisation and capacity increase.
Goodness knows what they would make of the tedious, time-consuming, horrendously expensive public enquiries, Royal Commissions and political posturing that takes place for rail, road and airport expansion projects.
The rest of us just look on in despair. It is also worth looking at the background to HS2 and its website before making silly political jibes.
