MY observations of cyclists in Oxford over the years have led me to the conclusion that a majority are colour blind.

They do not seem to recognise a red traffic light, the law does not apply to them as they cycle along Cornmarket at peak shopping times, or travel the wrong way in one-way streets, consider motorists mind-readers as they swerve across your front without warning to turn right and hog the middle of the road.

I must also mention that on a recent journey to and through the city centre, my wife and I estimated that 90 per cent of cyclists had no lights at all, or only a front or back light.

Are these people on a ‘death wish’? The time is right for another of the periodic clamp-downs by the authorities and this time with ‘teeth’, as it is obvious that the stern words and warnings given in the past have no effect.
