Sir – Witnessing the majority of councillors at the city council west area planning committee trying to tell themselves and one another that the damning independent report into their approval of the towering and destructive Roger Dudman Way blocks was just something to ‘move on from’ made me all the more determined.
How can councillors suggest moving on from this while the blocks, which destroy Port Meadow’s ambience and views by day and night, still stand as a damaging testament to the flaws, errors and limitations on city councillors’ and planning officers’ parts? Until those blocks are reduced by at least two storeys, restoring the timeless atmosphere and ‘protected’ views from Port Meadow, there will be very many of us who will not move on.
Had any other organisation received such a critical report it would have led to months of soul-searching. If Oxford City Council is not going to engage with the report in this way, it is up the rest of us to ensure that the findings of the report are neither forgotten, nor laid to rest, until the damage to our heritage views and beloved Port Meadow is undone.
