Sir - With reference to the Highways Agency report by Chris Buratta (Report, December 15), regarding the ever-increasing overload of traffic on the A34 Abingdon-M40.

A feasible and practical solution would be to install a new link road from East Challow (A417) on the south side of the railway to Didcot Power Station and on to the Thame junction of the M40. This could eventually lead to a direct east link route.

Such a scheme would divert much traffic from the grossly overloaded Oxford section of the A34, avoiding putting unacceptable and dangerous strain on local roads, relieving the hazardous Hanney/Steventon and Clifton Hampden/Stadhampton roads. Also, if appropriate, it would provide a direct link to the proposed reservoir site.

It could be built in sections, the Milton Heights (A34) to the Stadhampton being the most urgent; this would be hugely beneficial to national through-traffic and greatly relieve Oxford, Abingdon and Didcot.

With the impending large developments in the area, it is vital that gridlock is avoided and good national through routes maintained.
