OXFORD’S world-famous comic The Phoenix has celebrated its 100th edition.

The children’s comic launched in early 2012 and now has 10,000 readers internationally.

It is still produced at an office in Beaumont Street.

A special edition to celebrate the milestone went on sale on Saturday, and editor Will Fickling, 30, said the comic’s four-strong full-time team in Oxford and the 20 to 30 artists who contribute regularly were pleased to reach the landmark edition.

He said: “We have discovered we are the first children’s comic to reach 100 editions in 40 years.

“I suppose that’s because others just peter out, and because of our weekly nature we are producing them often.

“It is a big thing to reach the milestone, and we are very happy.”

The comic costs £2.99 for a single copy, with discounts for subscribers or online buyers.
