in March 1976 Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Oxford.
Together they visited the Westgate shopping centre, County Hall and the Jesus College residential block of flats in Farndon Road.
At County Hall, the Duke met a member of staff responsible for collecting money.
The Duke quipped: “I see. You grind the faces of the poor in the dust – the rich as well.” Both men laughed.
The previous time the Queen had visited Oxford before that trip was in 1968.
