I ENCLOSE a photograph of members of the Abingdon fire service after they moved into their new headquarters in Ock Street in 1964.
They are pictured in the control room of the £25,000 building. The previous headquarters in Bury Street was later pulled down to make way for the town’s central redevelopment scheme.
Space had been left in the new building for an extension if the station, manned at that time by part-time firemen, was converted to full-time staff. The firemen are, left to right, Peter Fathers, Phil Hope, Station Officer Cyril Fisher and my husband, Ron Polley.
Sitting in front of them is Barbara Earl, the only part-time firewoman in the county – Abingdon was then in Berkshire.
