A CONTROVERSIAL development which would triple the size of a village near Faringdon has been given the go-ahead.

The bid for up to 200 homes on land near the town was voted through by Vale of White Horse District Council’s planning committee at a public meeting at Abbey House in Abingdon.

The application from SGR (Faringdon) Limited is an outline bid to build on Fernham Fields, off Coxwell Road in Great Coxwell, and would triple the number of houses in the parish.

About 120 letters of objection were written ahead of the meet-ing, including opposition from Great Coxwell Parish Council and Faringdon Town Council.

Critics argued the development would harm the historic village.

Council planning officer Peter Brampton had recommended the plan be approved as homes were badly needed in the Vale.

But district councillor Alison Thomson warned the meeting: “Great Coxwell is a lovely, historic, tranquil village of 102 houeses and it would be over-whelmed by this development.”
