We would have thought that the drink-drive message had got home by now, but it clearly hasn't.

Figures from Thames Valley Police show that of 138 breath tests carried out in Oxfordshire since December 1, 19 have proved positive.

That means that 15 per cent of drivers were over the limit, putting not only themselves but other roads users in danger.

And we are still a week away from Christmas.

Next week will be a busy - and, some might say, critical - week for parties, a temptation for revellers to have one too many for the road.

We ask everyone to think of the possible consequences of drinking too much.

A driving ban, a hefty fine, higher insurance - and a probable death or serious injury to yourself, a relative, friend or stranger on your conscience for the rest of your life.
