YOUNGSTERS from St Francis (Cowley) came out on top in an exciting athletics competition at the Oxford University sports complex at Iffley Road.
They pipped Barley Hill (Thame) by one point in the final of the first event organised by the new Thame and Oxford School Sports Partnership.
And St Francis had the added thrill of receiving the trophy from Sir Roger Bannister, who set the first sub-four-minute mile at Iffley Road.
Oxford primary schools Cutteslowe, St Ebbes, John Henry Newman and St Andrews also took part in the final after winning heats at their local secondary school.
They competed in a variety of track and field events, including relay races, obstacle relays, long jump, vertical jump, javelin and triple jump - all in the sportshall.
The partnership has been set-up with the aim of improving the quality and quantity of PE and school sport.
It involves Oxford's 35 primary and special schools and five secondary schools, who have joined with Lord Williams's (Thame) and their feeder primaries.
