DOCTORS and nurses were among scores of people who gathered in Oxford city centre for a candle-lit vigil as part of nationwide protests against the privatisation of the NHS.
Candles spelling out 'NHS' surrounded by a heart were the centrepiece of the vigil, which took place in Bonn Square.
More than 200 passers-by added their names to the 'keep our NHS public' petition.
Richard Lohman, a support worker at Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, was among many health workers at the event.
He said: "We have attracted a good crowd and we seem to be raising awareness of the key issues.
"We are working to keep the NHS public. The main message is that PFI (Private Finance Initiative) is not proper financial investment. It's like buying a hospital on your credit card."
He said there will be a national demonstration in London on March 3 next year.
