VIKINGS invaded Wantage Park at the weekend as part of the town’s first Alfred’s Day.

To celebrate the Wantage-born monarch, Mayor Fiona Roper organised the event which saw the park taken over by historic re-enactment group The Vikings. And it was such a success, with up to 2,000 attending, it is hoped the event will return next year.

Mrs Roper said: “It was a really fantastic weekend.

“The weather wasn’t always great but there has been a steady stream of people coming and going.

“It has been really interesting and educational for everyone. The Battle of Ashdown re-enactment was throughly exciting and hugely enjoyable.

“Visitors could learn all about the medicine that was used at the time and how they lived.

“I’m really glad we did it and I hope we can do it again next year and make it part of Wantage’s history.”

The event coincided with Alfred’s Feast Day on Saturday.
