Picture 1: Ann Davis and her husband Michael were carrying on a tradition – running a confectionery and tobacco shop which had been trading for 100 years in a 14th-century building in the Buttermarket. Mrs Davis is pictured behind the counter in 1981.

Picture 2: This picture shows another of the town’s trading couples. Mr and Mrs T Evelyn Swain are pictured in 1964 with one of the treasured ‘witch balls’ which gave their antique shop its name. It was said to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.

Picture 3: Pupils at Lord Williams’s School and residents at Meadowcroft old people’s home co-operated in a project to set the town’s history down on paper. The pupils made notes as the residents spoke of their early life, to make sure memories did not die. In the picture, taken in 1988, Janie Lea, Andrea Kilbridge and Suzanne Thompson, all 13, found a particularly amusing interviewee, Margaret Wood, 85, known as Woody.
