POLICE are clamping down on motorists who drive off from petrol stations without paying for fuel.

Officers are working with garages to stop the thefts, which have cost owners in the county £4,720 since January.

So far this year there have been 178 reported incidents of so-called bilking, with an average loss of £26.52p.

PC Diane Blackmore-Heal said offenders would be tracked down and could be arrested.

She said: "They will be visited by a uniformed officer and could find their vehicle details being put on police computers."
