RESIDENTS of an Oxfordshire village will meet engineers and council officers to discuss how to fund ways of preventing future flooding.

Villagers in Nuneham Courtenay, which has been hit by floods three times in the last two months, have put forward a wish list of measures they would like to see put in place around their homes to stop flooding.

They range from short-term projects through to more costly long-term ones and include the building of drainage hatches, the inspection of some sections of culverts, clearing and deepening ditches, and deepening a pond.

Engineers working on behalf of South Oxfordshire District Council will be at the meeting together with landowners, council officers and councillors.

Paul Gillett, chairman of the village's parish council, said: "What we would like to have done and what gets done could be two different things.

"It will depend on how the engineers decide to go about their repairs. Some repairs can be done quite quickly and easily, while others might not be, as it will mean crossing different people's land. We will also have to discuss whose responsibility the repairs will be. Someone will have to pay for them.

"At the moment we really do not have an idea of how much it will cost, but obviously the long-term projects could be costly."

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be at Nuneham Courtenay village hall on Monday at 7pm.
