Sir - We have until December 18 to voice any concerns re the plans for the Westgate Centre. This October, councillors voted to accept the massive plans for a centre that would reaching down from the Central Library as far as Thames Street to the south and the College of Further Education to the west.

Capital Shopping was originally allowed the exclusive development rights for this area by the city without the usual practice of tenders and a competitive bid.

This was because the company was promising to provide, within the development, a public transport interchange that would enable Queen Street to be pedestrianised. They also promised zero-energy emissions achieved by a micro-energy system on the roof of the main building.

Now, over four years later, when climate change is nearly at the point of being irreversible, Labour and Lib Dem councillors have accepted a minimal commitment to reducing climate change in the present proposal. There is no provision of a bus station and disabled people from Abbey Place are to be removed from their purpose built city centre homes.

The development is so massive that it would involve an extra 90 delivery vehicles, per day, half of which would be articulated lorries plus ten more park-and-ride buses.

Data for estimated extra pollution in the main service street showed up as well above Government guidelines.

This street is where many of the flats are planned.

The other consequence of so many extra vehicles would be even more congestion on the narrow "pinch points" of the Botley and Abingdon Road entrances into the city from south and west.
