Sir - Oxfordshire county councillor Roger Belson threatens us with increases in our council tax if we don't recycle more (Letters, December 1). Oxfordshire is apparently threatened with fines if it doesn't reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill.
Why, then, did county council planning officers decide, from the outset, to support RWE npower's application to dump 500,000 tonnes of waste ash from Didcot Power Station in a wildlife-rich lake at Radley?
That ash is perfectly capable of being recycled (it can be used to make building materials), but RWE npower simply isn't prepared to make the effort (or the investment). Why doesn't Oxfordshire County Council have the backbone to stand up to RWE npower, and insist that they pursue recycling options more vigorously? Councillor Belson expects the Oxfordshire public to recycle, or be penalised. Why doesn't he apply the same standard when it comes to RWE npower?
