Oxford University hopefuls from the UK are facing stiffer competition from foreign students after a rise in overseas applications.
Overseas applications jumped by 60 per cent, from 3,378 to 5,409, between 2008 ans last year. Most universities say foreign students do not directly compete with UK students, because they are allocated a set number of places, but Oxford and Cambridge treat all applications on merit.
