It might be an ambitious target, but it is one we should aim to achieve.

The Oxfordshire Sports Partnership wants to recruit 25,000 people in the county to take up sport by the launch of the 2012 Olympics in a campaign entitled Our Sporting Future.

That would mean 10 a day joining in some form of sporting activity.

Figures produced by the partnership show that we are a lazy lot.

Despite all the health warnings, three out of four people in Oxfordshire are not involved in any sort of sport or exercise.

Organisers plan to target these idlers and get them active.

No-one is suggesting that they should go out and run a marathon, but a little gentle exercise every day could work wonders for many people's health.

If the target is to be reached, there will need to be a massive effort by governing bodies, councils, clubs, schools and other organisations, as well as a massive change in people's attitudes.

Too many of us are prepared to sit back in front of the television or computer, with minimal flexing of the limbs.

Lifestyle experts have been warning for years that people need to be more active and lead healthier lives. There have been dire warnings, too, about growing numbers of obese children.

Now is our chance to put things right.

The message must be - get involved. The forthcoming Olympics in London give us the ideal opportunity.
