Sir – The chairman of Berkeley Homes was wrong to say (Report, September 12) that the obligation to build social housing undermines the profitability of housebuilding in Oxford.
Anyone buying land for a large housing development in the city knows that some of the new homes will be social housing and they reduce their bids for the land accordingly. Their profits should be unaffected if they do not overbid. If Berkeley Homes won’t bid, there will be more opportunities for a number of other developers.
Dr James Fry, City councillor for North Ward
