Your article (September 19) incorrectly stated that the by-election in North Ward was caused by Lib Dem Cllr Alan Armitage, pictured, standing down after censure by colleagues. We want to make it clear that this was not the case. Colleagues had discussed with him the allegations which led to a Standards Committee hearing but did not suggest that he stood down.
Following calls from Labour councillors for his resignation as lord mayor he stood down from that office in March but continued as a ward councillor for North Ward.
During the summer his circumstances changed so that he had the opportunity to move to Edinburgh in August. He felt that he could not continue to represent North Ward when living in Edinburgh so resigned his seat at the end of July, which led to the need for a by-election. He had represented North Ward for many years on both city and county councils. We wish him well in his new life in Edinburgh.
