Boris Johnson has talked of his shock of learning a friend died in a street incident.

Stephen Langford, 43, died outside a police station in Henley-upon-Thames as he walked home in the early hours of Saturday.

Mr Johnson, the area's MP, knew Mr Langford through fundraising activities in the town and has promised to meet with police to discuss ways to make the community safer.

A post-mortem examination revealed the mobile phone network area manager from St Anne's Close in Henley died from a head injury.

Mr Johnson said: "He was a very, very nice guy. I want to reassure people Henley is still one of the safest places in Britain.

"Mr Langford was a man who put himself out to help others and to raise funds for many good causes.

Mr Langford died after walking home after a night with friends in Grays Road. A police officer tried to resuscitate him and he was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital but later died.

Mr Langham was a regular at the Bird In Hand pub in Henley and noted for his charity work in the town with the Round Table.

Police are appealing for witnesses who have not come forward to call them on 08458 505505, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
