ONE of West Oxfordshire's best-known civic leaders, Joe Walcott, received the Member of the British Empire at an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Mr Walcott, who was 80 last August, was Mayor of Carterton, as well as vice-chairman of West Oxfordshire District Council, between 2000 and 2002, before becoming chairman of the district authority until 2006.
His grandson is Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott, who came to Carterton to turn on the Christmas lights this year.
