Sir – No change given is the first notice motorists read as they park their cars. This is followed by the cheeky remark over-payment accepted. Supermarket self-service areas have proved that the technology has been with us sometime for machines to accept notes, all silver coins and all copper coins and then to supply change in notes, all silver and all copper coins: Bank cards can also be used.
Prices requested at parking meters make over-payments very common. This should now be made unacceptable by installing new change-friendly machines.
No doubt the case will be made that it is too expensive to replace machines, and over-payment accepted is a nice little earner, but why should motorists have to accept this situation when change-friendly machines are commonly used elsewhere.
