Historian William Woodruff came to Oxford in 1936 as one of the university's first mature students, from a poor background in Blackburn, where he was born in the carding room of a cotton mill. His biography The Road to Nab End, a bestseller, has now been reprinted with its sequel Nab End and Beyond (Abacus, £9.99)
