Grumpy old women they may be in their everyday lives, but it was an audience of distinctly non-grumpy old women who put on their gladrags and packed Oxford's New Theatre on Monday. They were there to see the stage version of the popular BBC2 show Grumpy Old Women featuring comedienne/actresses Jenny Eclair and Rhona Cameron, and actress Annette Badland (she played the mum in TV's Cutting It) performing a side-splitting parody of female middle age.

For forty-something women everywhere, this was lots of fun. In the space of two hours, the three performers acted out an exhaustive dissection of the 'little ways' that creep up on ladies of a certain age.

Touching a nerve in so many ways, both humorously and poignantly, Jenny, Rhona and Annette's observations were spot on, with the conclusion that, yes, we are all turning into our mothers!

And everything was fair game - from sex, men and shopping, to fashion, children and food. Female middle age seems to have had something of a renaissance in recent times - yes, there are still the tedious 'menopausal women' jibes to contend with, but there is a new camaraderie and understanding that our mothers were never privy to.

Jenny, Rhona and Annette showed huge stamina as they sashayed, stomped, shouted and swooned their way through a hugely amusing script. If this stage show comes round again ladies, and you just want to wallow in the absolute glory of middle age, then this is a must see. It was such fun!
