Two boys were arrested by police following allegations they sexually molested a nine-year-old child.

The boys, aged 10 and 13 years old, were first questioned by police after reports another boy suffered an assault in Windale Avenue, Greater Leys, Oxford, in October.

Weeks later, the alleged victim's mother contacted police with further information given to her by her son, and they questioned the two suspects a second time.

Both have since been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

An internal police inquiry into how the investigation has been carried out is also underway after complaints from the alleged victim's mother and a local councillor.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "At the moment it is being treated as sexual assault but we are waiting for advice from the Crown Prosecution Service before we proceed with the case."

Police were first made aware of allegations of assault on October 7 and interviewed two suspects.

Later that month, more serious allegations surrounding a sexual assault were made to police and the 10-year-old and 13-year-old were interviewed and then arrested on November 13.

They have been given police bail and have not been charged with any offence.
