Sir - It was most pleasing to read the report (November 24) about the resurfacing work and clutter removal in the High Street. Also to see the county council's comment that this work was "an effort to preserve the street's historic character". May I suggest that there is now a particular opportunity to further this cause by reducing the number of buses in the High Street, particularly the London and airport-bound ones.

You reported (November 10) that the Thornhill park-and-ride is to be revamped. This is to be welcomed but it is also an opportunity to implement one of the excellent suggestions in the interview with Jeremy Mogford where he recommends the setting up of bus hubs round the city.

I strongly recommend that the improved Thornhill should become the terminus for all the London and airport coaches.

Passengers could readily use the park-and-ride buses to get into the city and, at a stroke, some of the appalling bus congestion in the High Street would have been removed. I would ask the county council to look at this suggestion as a matter of urgency. Action must be taken to save the High from the multitude of buses. This is an opportunity not to be missed.
