Sir - In his gripe about the A44 (December 1) Jeremy Clarkson's logic is perfectly sound. Firstly it is a fact that not everyone keeps to speed limits; otherwise speed cameras would never raise money.

It is also a fact that some drivers ignore single white lines and overtake anyway; we see it happening all the time. Given that the A44 has only two lanes, along the section being considered, anyone overtaking will clearly be on the wrong side of the road for a spell.

This is true whether those overtaking are exceeding the speed limit or not. The final irrefutable fact is that the slower the driver, the more likely he or she will be overtaken. And by the way, Mr Clarkson's concern is for the safety of those remaining in the correct lane and driving within the speed limit.
