Alan Armitage, the former Lord Mayor of Oxford who stood down over inappropriate comments allegedly made to a schoolgirl, has resigned his seat on Oxford City Council.

The Liberal Democrat councillor was censured by the council’s standards committee earlier this year after allegedly saying “it’s sexy when you bend down like that” to a girl at a school event last July.

He resigned as Lord Mayor in March, but vowed to continue as a city councillor after denying the allegations.

Oxford City Council has today confirmed that its chief executive Peter Sloman has received a letter from Mr Armitage, resigning his position as a councillor for the North ward, effective from the end of the month.

He had already stood down as a county councillor for West Central Oxford after he was not selected as a candidate for the county council election on May 2.

Mr Armitage has not yet given any reason for his resignation, which comes more than a year after the incident.
