A WOMAN claimed thousands in benefits despite her husband receiving more than £100,000 in a will, a court heard.
Patricia Walker, 33, of Mays Close, Fritwell, near Bicester, claimed housing and council tax benefits worth £6,207.91, but failed to disclose her husband’s bequest.
This week, Banbury magistrates ordered her to complete 120 hours’ unpaid work and pay costs of £250. Walker, who has since repaid the cash she received in benefits, admitted at an earlier hearing failing to disclose changes in circumstances which affected her right to claim benefits.
An investigation was launched by Cherwell District Council officers after it received information from the Department for Work and Pensions.
Ken Atack, Cherwell’s lead member for finance, said: “This prosecution should serve as a warning that the benefit system is there to help people in need, not top up the finances of those who can support themselves.”
